List and describe the five patterns for organizing the main ideas of a speech

What will be an ideal response?

1. Topical organization works well if your central idea has natural divisions. You may organize your main points according to primacy (discussing your most important or convincing point first), recency (the point that was discussed last is the one the audience will remember most), or complexity (arranging ideas from the simple to the more complex).
2. Chronological organization works well if your central idea could be explained best by a number of steps. Chronological organization by time orders steps according to when each occurred or should occur. The progression you choose can be either "forward in time," or "backward in time."
3. Spatial organization is based on arranging ideas according to their location or direction.
4. Cause and effect organization focuses on a situation and its causes or a situation and its effects.
5. Problem–solution organization focuses on a problem and then solutions to it or on a solution and then the problems it would solve.

Ashley advances the following argument: "The war in Afghanistan is beginning to look a lot like the war in Vietnam

The U.S. is fighting a guerilla insurgency that has widespread popular support, it is often impossible to tell enemies from friends, and the enemy can melt away into the villages and countryside after attacking our troops. It is likely, therefore, that we will end up losing in Afghanistan just as we did in Vietnam." During Ashley's question-and-answer period, Khadijah objects, saying that while our opponents in Vietnam adhered to a single political ideology, our adversaries in Afghanistan often fight among themselves because of important ideological differences. She also points out that the Viet Cong were supported by outside agents—the USSR and Communist China—while al-Qaeda does not have such outside sponsors. Khadijah is objecting to Ashley's use of comparison. Indicate whether the statement is true or false.
