Outline the contemplation stage of behavior change
The contemplation stage encompasses individuals who are considering making a positive behavior change within the next 6 months. In this stage, people are weighing the pros and cons of behavior change. To reach the contemplation stage, individuals tend to know of the benefits of change, but they are also very aware that there may be negative aspects associated with the change. If the balance does not swing more heavily toward the benefits of changing, individuals may be stuck in limbo for an extended period of time while they continue to weigh the pros and cons. While in this stage, most individuals will not be ready for interventions typically designed for people more prepared to actively change their behavior. Building a person's efficacy for successful change is a more appropriate stage-matched target of change.?
