K.B.'s Glasgow Coma Scale score begins to decline from 15 to 11 . What are possible reasons

for changes in her neurologic status?

What will be an ideal response?

The Glasgow Coma Scale score reflects changes in neurologic status. Because K.B. fell while skiing,
she could also have a secondary head injury (a response to trauma that might not be evident for
several hours, days, or weeks after the impact) that might have been exacerbated by the surgical
procedure and anesthesia. It is usually a result of brain tissue destruction secondary to hypoxia,
hemorrhage, or edema and results in increased intracranial pressure (ICP), which can lead to brain
damage and death. K.B. could also be experiencing an undesired response to pain medication.
