What is symbiosis? Define the three types of symbiosis and provide an example of each
What will be an ideal response?
Symbiosis describes a situation where individuals of two species live in close association with one another. Symbiotic relationships are divided into three types depending on the effects they have on the participating species. Parasitism benefits one member of the interaction and harms the other. Familiar examples include fleas, tapeworms, and other organisms that live on or in their hosts and obtain nutrients from them. Pathogens such as bacteria or viruses are parasites as well. Commensalism is a form of symbiosis that benefits one species of the interaction while having no effect on the other species. For example, the remora is a small fish that attaches itself to a shark with a suction cup. In addition to obtaining protection from its host, the remora feeds on small scraps of food produced when the shark eats. The remora has no effect on the shark (at least, as far as we know!). Mutualism is a form of symbiosis that benefits both species involved. Mycorrhizae, the close association between fungi and plant roots, represent a mutualistic relationship. The fungus receives nutrients from the plant while helping the roots to absorb water and minerals. (Other examples are possible.)
