The governor of your state has asked you to design a comprehensive statewide plan to prevent
child abuse and neglect, establishing primary, secondary, and tertiary programs.
Discuss a
benefit to each type of prevention as well as one example of a type of program under each type.
What will be an ideal response?
Primary prevention programs are effective because they stop abuse from occurring. An
example would be to offer child development classes in all high schools.
Secondary prevention efforts target parents who are most likely to be abusers. Parent education
classes could be offered to teen parents.
Tertiary prevention programs stop abuse from reoccurring. Providing incentives and training for more
foster homes would help in this endeavor. Also training of mandated reporters so that suspicions of
child abuse and neglect are reported to the authorities.
