You have to give a presentation to a group of fellow students today on the rhythms of the heart called premature contractions

a. Discuss the similarities and differences of PACs and PVCs. Both are premature contractions.
b. What are the symptoms, if any?
c. What are the treatments, if any, for both disorders?
d. Does either of these dysrhythmias lead to other disorders? If so, what are they?

Students' answers should include the following:
a. PACs are premature atrial contractions, and PVCs are premature ventricular contractions.
They occur from premature stimulation from the electrical system of the heart.
The P wave is usually early and an aberrant beat in relation to the QRS complex with both the PACs and PVCs; in PVCs, the ventricular beat, which is larger and in the opposite direction.
b. Symptoms, if any, with both PACs and PVCs such as pallor, flip-flopping feeling in the chest, faintness, sweating, nausea, etc.
c. Medications include lidocaine for PVCs that cause R-on-T phenomenon, which can be a deadly issue.
d. Supraventricular tachycardia is a major dysrhythmia that can occur as are other heart disorders, which may be involved, more likely with PVCs then PACs.
