Discuss the drawbacks of the industry life cycle.
What will be an ideal response?
Although the industry life cycle is a useful framework to guide strategic choice, industries do not necessarily evolve through these stages. Moreover, innovations can emerge at any stage of the industry life cycle, which in turn can initiate a new cycle. Industries can also be rejuvenated, often in the declining stage. The industry life cycle model does not explain everything about changes in industries. Some industries may never go through the entire life cycle, while others are continually renewed through innovation. It is necessary to consider that other factors such as fads in fashion, changes in demographics, or deregulation can affect the dynamics of industry life cycles.
