Describe the purpose of catalysts.
What will be an ideal response?
The chemical reactions fuel cells make use of do not happen without some form of help. That is why they all require catalysts. It is why cells operating at higher temperatures need catalysts that are less effective (cheaper) than catalysts in lower temperature cells. The energy required to start the required chemical reactions is more than that needed to keep the reaction going once it starts. Catalysts in part bypass this overpotential to make things easier, in the same way that rocking a car makes it easier to get going. The formal term for this in chemistry is called the activation energy, and it means just that––the energy needed to activate a chemical reaction.
