Discuss the problem of HIV/AIDS among women inmates.

What will be an ideal response?

The rate of HIV/AIDS infection is higher for female offenders than for male offenders. According to the Women’s Prison Association (2003), the percentage of women in state and federal prisons who are infected with HIV/AIDS is 3.6%, which is 12 times the national rate of infection. For men in prison, the percentage is 2.1%, which is a third lower than for women in prison (Women’s Prison Association, 2003). In the general public, the rate for HIV/AIDS is twice as high for men as for women. Research indicates that female inmates tend to have higher rates of HIV due to involvement in risky sexual behavior. Interestingly, there is also a connection between this risky behavior and these women having experienced prior sexual abuse (Women’s Prison Association, 2003).
