Why is early and intensive intervention especially critical for children with autism?

Answers will vary but should mention that successful range of achievement usually occur in a small window of time in the early months/years of a child's life. The earlier intervention can begin, the better the outcome for children. Lovaas conducted a study that provided a group of children with autism an early intensive behavioral intervention weekly program of one-to-one treatment that continued for two years or more before age 4 years. Intervention included parent training and inclusion in a preschool setting with typically developing children. In comparison to a control group, the EIBI group gained an average of 20 IQ points and made major advances in educational achievement. Nine of the children moved from first to second grade and were considered well-adjusted by their teacher. Follow-up of the children years later, showed that the children had maintained their gains. The study suggests the importance of early intervention as a factor that can help children with autism achieve normal functioning in general education classrooms.
