Compare and contrast sediments deposited from the coastline to the deep marine environment

Give examples of the sedimentary rocks that form by the lithification of these sediments. What will be an ideal response?

The student should discuss transitional marine environments including sands deposited in beach
and barrier island environments, shales deposited in deltaic environments, etc. Organic reef
deposits commonly include fossiliferous limestones at somewhat deeper water depths. Shales
composed of clay minerals are common sedimentary rocks indicating moderate water depths in
the marine environment. Fine-grained carbonate deposits are common in the far-offshore marine
environment as well as graded bedding in deposits by turbidity currents in deep marine
environments.
