Process in which clinicians make sense of a client’s presenting concerns within the context of a psychotherapy theoretical framework. It addresses how clinicians explain or understand a client’s symptoms, cognitions, feelings, strengths, challenges, and behaviors in terms of a specific theory or an integration of theories. Clinicians’ understanding of these issues provides the basis for their formulating counseling goals and intervention strategies.
