The terms point, pica and em are all units of measure in typography. Explain the relationship between point and pica and how they differ from an em.

A point is 1/72nd of an inch; a pica is 1/6th of an inch. Both of these are useful for measuring vertical and horizontal sizes and distances. These are both absolute measures, which are in contrast to an em, which is a linear measure, equal to the point size of the font. This is a relative measure. An increase in font size results in an increase in the distance that an em covers.
