Identify important points to be covered in a basic nutrition plan with CHO counting

What will be an ideal response?

Begin by stating that the purpose of a meal plan is to make healthy nutritional choices and maintain
glucose levels within the target range as much as possible. The CHO in her diet should provide 45%
to 65% of the daily calories or 150 to 250 g/day. Patients usually start with 45 to 60 g of CHO per
meal. You need to teach her foods that contain CHOs, how to read food labels, and how to measure
appropriate serving sizes. She should have a fiber intake of 25 g/day. Teach her how to adjust CHO
exchanges based on fiber content of her meals. After providing her with basic nutritional guidelines,
refer her to a dietitian for an individualized meal plan. She also needs to know sick day guidelines
when illness interferes with nutritional intake.
Teach her that one alcoholic beverage can be ingested with the meal plan. However, because of
the risk of hypoglycemia, this should be only with or shortly after meals.
