Explain the use of the cricothyrotomy

A cricothyrotomy is performed as follows:
1. Locate the cricothyroid membrane by placing the finger on the Adam’s apple and sliding downward toward the feet until you feel a slightly indented area, the cricothyroid membrane.
2. Using a scalpel, make an incision and widen it.
3. To maintain the opening, place an item (suction tip or finger) into the incision. Artificial respiration may be administered through this temporary air space.
