Appraise and evaluate the following statement, and cite evidence from the chapter as appropriate: Despite having a closer "outward" appearance to plants in some ways, evidence support fungi as being far more closely related to animals than plants

What will be an ideal response?

Fungi have cell walls, mushrooms produced by some fungi have a basic resemblance to plant stems, and mycelia have some basic resemblances and functions similar to microscopic plant roots. But these are superficial considerations compared to clearer evidence of fungi not being plant-like and being more closely related to animals. The cell walls are made of chitin, a structural material found in numerous animals such as insects, not plants. Fungi are heterotrophic and thus very different from plants: fungi don't have chloroplasts or the ability to conduct photosynthesis. DNA evidence has placed fungi as having more in common with animal genomes than with plants. Finally, there is even a group of mobile fungi, the chytrids, which demonstrate a closer connection to the ancestral protists that may have given rise to both animal and fungal lines of evolution.
