Eukaryotic cells typically contain pairs of chromosomes, called homologues, that carry the same genes with similar, although usually not identical, nucleotide sequences. These alternative forms of a gene are called alleles. Cells containing paired homologous chromosomes are called diploid. Cells with only a single copy of each type of chromosome are called haploid.
