Discuss the disadvantages of virtualization, and how those might be addressed.

What will be an ideal response?

One disadvantage is that the server hardware can be a single point of failure. Plan to build in hardware fault tolerance and disaster recovery to reduce the impact of hardware failure. For example, consider purchasing server hardware that contains redundant power supplies, CPUs, memory, network interfaces, and RAID level 1 or level 5 disk storage fault tolerance. Another option is to have a backup server computer on hand in case the main one fails. As a disaster recovery step, the backup computer might already be set up with virtual machines to match those on the primary server; you can regularly back up data from the virtual machines on the primary server to those on the backup server. If the primary server goes down, the backup server can take over. For better disaster recovery, place the backup server computer in a different location from the primary server.

Another disadvantage of virtualization is that backing up all of the virtual machines on a single computer can be a much slower process than backing up a single server with a single operating system and no virtual machines. Backing up virtual machines can stress network, CPU, and memory resources on a single computer. You can reduce some of the burden by employing incremental backups. Another option is to purchase software designed to expedite backups on virtual machines.
