What role did the coloni play in the Late Empire? How did their social standing change, and was the change entirely negative?

What will be an ideal response?

The coloni represented a significant labor force in the Late Empire, as well as a forerunner of serfdom. Coloni became tied to the estates of the landowners for whom they worked; the landowners in turn offered protection and community. Thus, the formerly free peasant and sometimes the landowner surrendered a bit of personal freedom in order to find safety in numbers. Initially similar to a form of sharecropping or tenant farming, coloni eventually found themselves unable to leave the service of the landowner, whether through impoverishment or through restrictions on access, and worked on a self-sufficient estate similar to the manor found in the medieval world.
