Briefly describe the four printing methods.
What will be an ideal response?
• Desktop printing: This is printing work from your computer that is networked with a desktop printer, such as a low-end ink jet printer or high-end laser printer.
• Digital printing: This is a more sophisticated version of the desktop printer that can yield high quality and high quantity output of digital files with a quick turn-around.
• Commercial/Mechanical (offset) printing: This is the traditional method for getting artwork to print. A digital file is transferred to a film negative, which is then used to burn a metal printing plate.
• Portable Document File (PDF): This is an increasingly popular, digital, postscript-based format developed by Adobe that supports both vector and bitmapped data. PDF is a convenient way to maintain all attributes of an original file into a cross-compatible format.
