Describe how excessive algae growth can occur in a freshwater ecosystem, and explain why it is a problem
What will be an ideal response?
Such algae growth is caused by an excess of nutrients (especially nitrogen and/or phosphorus) in the waterway. As the algae die off, they provide organic material for decomposing bacteria. Because the bacteria need oxygen, the increased bacterial activity drives down levels of dissolved oxygen. Oxygen levels can drop too low to support fish and shellfish that require oxygen, leading to a loss of biodiversity and dramatic changes in aquatic ecosystems.
