How does Erikson’s concept of identity, formed during the adolescent stage, apply to Allen’s ambition to change careers? How does it compare to Rogers’s self-concept?
What will be an ideal response?
Erikson suggested that during adolescence we experience the identity versus role confusion crisis. Occupational choice is central to a sense of identity. Allen had chosen a career path just after high school but his college career was interrupted because of family obligations. Thus, this crisis was not resolved positively. It appears that Allen is going back to this stage to more successfully resolve the crisis by going back to college and fulfilling his dream of becoming a teacher.
Erikson’s sense of identity is similar to Rogers’s self-concept in that they both involve a sense of who an individual perceives s/he is.
