The attenuation doctrine is an exception to the fruit of the poisonous tree doctrine that allows a prosecutor to admit evidence that would otherwise be inadmissible because of an illegal search. The attenuation doctrine applies where the connection between the unlawful conduct of the police and the discovery of the challenged evidence is so unrelated as to dissipate the taint.
