In a study reported by Dunn (2006), slightly over half of the friendships appeared to be built upon a give and take relationship where all the partners contributed equally to the relationship. Other children, about 20% of the population, formed leader-follower relationships where one partner definitely directs the activities. Children involved this these types of friendships did not complain about their roles. Finally, just fewer than 30% of the children were involved in friendships classified as boss relationships. Interactions occurring with this type of relationship involved a definite director of the play activity and a partner who complained about the other player being the director.
