What is the basic debate regarding the full inclusion movement? What seems to be fueling this debate? Which side of the argument makes the most sense to you?
What will be an ideal response?
The debate regarding the full inclusion movement is divided between advocates of special education who want to see full inclusion of all children with delays and disabilities into all aspects of society, especially education. The other side of the debate are those advocates who feel this is a return to the “dark ages” of special education where full inclusion could set back all efforts to get specialized programming that fits the unique needs of each child and his or her family. Some scholars believe that what is fueling this debate is simply unclear language or terminology of what “inclusion” and “least restrictive environment” really mean. Student answers will vary on the last part of the question, but most may answer they do not agree with full inclusion since it does not take into consideration the most appropriate placement based on needs of a child, which in some cases could mean no inclusion.
