Positive signs include: participation in setting and accomplishment of SMART goals; participation in setting and accomplishment of stretch goals; appropriate responses to positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, and punishment; appropriate response to frequent and real-time performance feedback; successful application of expectancy theory; appreciation for and contribution to employees' development needs per Maslow's hierarchy; achievement of existence needs, relatedness needs, and growth needs per the ERG theory; achievement of achievement needs and affiliation needs per McClelland; achievement of both extrinsic and intrinsic rewards; appropriate use of job rotation, job enlargement, and job enrichment; presence of appropriate hygiene factors and motivators; presence of meaning, responsibility, and feedback per Hackman and Oldham; empowerment of employees; fair treatment of employees per equity theory; presence of procedural justice; and implementation of quality of work life (QWL) programs.

Negative signs include absence of the above positive signs; higher turnover and absenteeism; less good citizenship; more grievances and lawsuits; strikes; stealing, sabotage, and vandalism; poorer mental and physical health; more injuries; poor customer service; and lower productivity and profits.
