The term white-collar crime first was introduced in 1939 by sociologist Edwin H. Sutherland in his presidential address to the American Sociological Association. Sutherland discussed the need for academics to expand the study of crime to include the misconduct of business and professional elites. Ten years later, Sutherland defined white-collar crime as “crimes committed by a person of respectability and high social status in the course of his occupation.” This definition focused on offenses committed by highly respected individuals in pursuit of their professional goals.
