An elementary school nurse is performing an annual screening on a child. The child is asked to bend forward from the waist and touch her toes. What disorder is characterized by lateral curvature of the spine in this position?

a. list c. lordosis
b. kyphosis d. scoliosis

D
Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine (the thoracic or lumbar vertebrae). The curvature becomes accentuated on forward flexion from the waist. A list is a leaning of the spine. If an imaginary line is drawn straight down from T1, the gluteal cleft is lateral to it. In scoliosis, the imaginary line rests in the gluteal cleft, and the spine deviates from this straight line. Kyphosis is an excessive convexity of the thoracic spine. Lordosis is an excessive concavity of the lumbar spine.
