Explain the concepts on the continuum of decision-making.
What will be an ideal response?
The continuum illustrates the factors involved with how decisions are made and who makes them and how they influence patient satisfaction, compliance with prescribed treatment, and recuperation. The physician control is at one end where the provider is responsible for all decision-making. Here, the physician does most of the talking, asks most of the questions, often interrupts the patient, may abruptly change topics, and may even ignore the patient. The physician is in control. At the opposite end of the continuum is patient control. The patient exercises his or her right to determine his or her treatment and assumes responsibility for decision-making. The midpoint is collaboration, where provider and patient share information, negotiate their perspectives, and reach a mutually satisfactory decision. This is more time-consuming than the extreme ends of the continuum, but this approach preserves the patient’s right to participate fully in decisions affecting his or her health and allows for more balanced interaction and consensus building.
