Use May's concepts of responsibility and authenticity to explain Jillian's decisions to come out, to have a child, and to get married.
What will be an ideal response?
May suggested that we all are responsible for who we are and what we become. In other words, that we control what our lives are like. Jillian was tired of hiding her sexual orientation and decided to do something about it: come out. She also wanted a child even though her sexual relationships could not provide one. She, again, determined a solution and fulfilled this need. She assumed responsibility for her life and happiness.
These activities, as well as her same-sex marriage, also illustrate May's concept of authenticity. Jillian did not use others' value systems to live her life; she used her own. If she were to live by society's values, she would not have been open about her sexual orientation, would not have married someone of the same sex and would not have a child outside the confines of an opposite sex marriage.
