Describe the formation of coal deposits. What environmental conditions are required to produce

these deposits? Why is coal important? What will be an ideal response?

Coal deposits commonly are formed in swamp environments. Shallow water in swamps allows
preservation of organic material until it can be buried and transformed into coal. Swamps also
commonly have abundant vegetation. Coal is an important fuel source, especially for industry
and electricity generation.
