Compare and contrast Himalayan-style orogenesis and Andean-style orogenesis. What

differences would you expect in these two major mountain chains as a result of these
differences? What will be an ideal response?

The student should discuss continental-continental convergent plate margins (Himalaya
Mountains) and oceanic-continental plate margins (Andes Mountains). The Andean-style
orogenesis is associated with a subduction zone and abundant volcanic and igneous rocks
as well as tectonic products. The Himalayan-style orogenesis is associated with extreme
tectonic effects, including metamorphic effects, and less abundant igneous and volcanic
rocks.
