How could McCrae and Costa explain some of the inconsistencies in Subira's behavior (e.g., that she is often late to meet friends but not for auditions)?

What will be an ideal response?

Variation in a person's behavior can be due to the influence of the environment. McCrae and Costa suggest that basic tendencies (the five traits) are stable but that characteristic adaptations (habits, attitudes, roles, etc.) can fluctuate due to the influence of environmental factors, in this case the situation. Although punctuality can be thought of as one component of conscientiousness, it is only one factor in that basic tendency and Subira's inconsistency in being on time can be thought of as a characteristic adaptation that is influenced by such external factors as the situation. Overall Subira is conscientious because there are so many aspects to this trait, but she is less consistent with this one particular aspect of it. In fact, because Subira is being conscientious in her auditions, she is not being punctual with her friends.
