Describe the avoidant attachment style.

What will be an ideal response?

An infant would demonstrate no distress when the mother left, no distress with the stranger, and no interest in the mother when she returned. Mothers were indifferent to their children and did not exhibit attachment behavior toward their children. Infants learned through previous comfort-seeking attempts that they would be rejected so ultimately stopped seeking comfort. This served as a defense to deal with the unpredictability of the parent’s behavior. Avoidant adults are more likely to rely on distance coping strategies when faced with stress or pressure in relationships. They report higher self-esteem but hold negative views of others in relationships.
