Describe how teachers’ and students’ views of ELLs impact their ability to learn.

Ans: Answers to this question will vary but should include elements of the following: How teachers and society view ELLs has a significant impact on their ability and desire to learn and succeed. How well schools structure classrooms and foster an inclusive climate will foster the confidence of ELLs and create more positive relations with other students. ELLs who are educated primarily in separate parts of the school building, away from their peers, lose an important opportunity to improve their English and make social connections. In addition, other students lose the opportunity to learn more about other cultures. Teachers of ELLs must have knowledge about culture, knowledge about the process of learning language, skills in adapting curriculum, and understanding of the sociopolitical effects on their students (Campbell, 2010).
