Son preference is the cultural view that sons are more beneficial to the family and social structure than daughters and thus are valued and sought. This may lead to female infanticide, abandonment, etc. It also contributes to sex ratio imbalances that are shown to contribute to increased rates of crime and particularly violence against women. Son preference also perpetuate stereotypes regarding the value of women/girls and their ability to contribute socially.
