It played a critical role in the Spanish defeat of the Aztecs. The Spanish unknowingly carried with them the deadly smallpox virus, which infected and killed large numbers of Aztecs. This allowed the Spanish conquistador Cortes to vanquish the Aztecs within two years of his arrival in Mexico.
