Discuss why good communication is important for safety, well-being, and good patient care. Discuss methods of communication used by the nursing assistant. What could happen if you forget to report and record observations that indicate a change in the patient's condition?
What will be an ideal response?
Communication is used to send and receive information. The nursing assistant receives information verbally from the supervisor and from written records that describe the care to be given to the patient. This information is important because it describes the care to be given. If this information is not communicated or is disregarded by the nursing assistant, patients may not receive the proper care for their conditions. The nursing assistant communicates verbally, in writing, and through body language. The nursing assistant sends and receives information about observations and care of patients, interactions with patients and visitors, and patients' feelings.
The nursing assistant delivers the majority of the personal care of the patient. Because of this, the assistant is in the best position to detect small or subtle changes in the patient's condition before anyone else does. These changes could signal an improvement or decline in the patient's condition. If the changes are reported in a timely manner, the patient will receive timely treatment and the patient's outcome will be improved.
