Briefly describe the four stages of Erik Erikson's psychosocial theory of development relevant to early childhood
What will be an ideal response?
During the ages of birth and 2, young children experience trust versus mistrust, where they learn whether their caregivers will respond to their various attempts at communication. Autonomy versus shame and doubt occurs between the ages of 2 and 3, and during this stage children need to learn that they have independence and that they can successfully exert this independence in their larger world. During the preschool years, the relevant stage is initiative versus guilt, and children need to have purpose in exploring their environment and be allowed the space and opportunity to take risks and freely explore. During the primary grades, industry versus inferiority is the relevant stage identified by Erikson, and during this stage children need to develop a sense of confidence.
