When an action potential arrives at the end of an axon, the neuron releases neurotransmitter molecules into the space between the neuron and the target cell. The neurotransmitter molecules are released through exocytosis; that is, small vesicles containing the neurotransmitter molecules fuse to the neuron's cell membrane and release their contents outside the cell. The neurotransmitter molecules then diffuse across the space between the neuron and its target cell and bind to receptor proteins on the cell membrane of the target cell. The binding of neurotransmitter molecules opens ion channels, allowing ions to enter the target cell. These ions change the membrane potential of the target cell, making it either more likely or less likely to fire.
