Describe Freud's theory of the structure of the mind. How do the mind's elements interact and govern behavior? Give an example
What will be an ideal response?
* Freud believed that the structure of the mind consisted of the id, ego, and superego.
* The id is concerned with obtaining pleasure, the ego develops a realistic plan for obtaining pleasure, and the superego seeks perfection and punishes behavior, which violated society's rules as learned through parents.
* The id and superego are constantly trying to pull against one another, while the ego tries to find an acceptable middle road.
* The response should include an example of how these elements interact in "real life." (See Figure 11-7, p. 461.)
