Explain the process children go through when learning a second language and how it affects their cognitive skills.

What will be an ideal response?

Most young children have little difficulty learning more than one language. Eventually, they speak each of them with no interference from the other. When learning a second language, children follow a process similar to that used to acquire the first language. Common principles of learning are used as the foundation for acquiring both languages. To function effectively in their multi-language environment, bilingual children must switch from one language system to the other. Because of this, bilingual children often develop a deeper awareness of how language works, thereby giving them an advantage. As a result, bilingualism generally enhances cognitive development.
