Identify and explain four elements of Montessori’s work that are applicable to young children with disabilities. What elements do you find most impactful for working with children with disabilities? Why?

What will be an ideal response?

Student’s answers will vary as there are 10 elements that are applicable. These elements include: (1) the use of mixed groupings, (2) individuation within the context of a supportive classroom community, (3) emphasis on functionality within the Montessorian environment, (4) development of independence and choice-making, (5) development of organized work patterns, (6) classic Montessorian demonstration, (7) emphasis on repetition, (8) materials with a built-in control of error, (9) materials that provide concrete representations of abstract things, and (10) sensory materials that develop and organize sensory perceptions. Student’s answers will vary on the second part of the question. Students might give answers such as an emphasis on repitition so that young children have the chance to explore through trial and error; they may note that supportive classroom enviroments provide a safe space for children to learn and grow; they might also mention the benefit of using built-in control of error so that children can learn and grow while using self-correcting (or only one correct way to use) tools.
