Knowing how efficient the human immune system is, explain why cancerous cells that threaten health can seemingly develop undetected.
The human body defenses do attack and attempt to remove toxins and cells, but only when recognized as foreign, or nonself. The problem with cancer is that a human's own healthy cells become essential parasites on his or her own cells and tissues. These cancerous cells, however, are still recognized as self, and therefore are not removed by the immune system.
