Michael is blind due to damage to his V1 area. He was recently asked to participate in a research study where he was asked to point at objects that appeared on a computer screen. Surprisingly, he got quite a few correct. What could explain this?

What will be an ideal response?

Michael was able to locate some of the objects on the screen even though he is blind due to a phenomenon called blindsight. People like Michael with damage to V1 are sometimes able to respond to visual information without perceiving it consciously. There are two possible reasons why this occurs. First, there might be some healthy tissue that remains although it isn't enough to provide conscious perception of vision. It could also be that the thalamus is sending visual input to other parts of the brain.
