The stages of change framework is applicable to most social work practice settings, including the development of the professional self. Provide an example of this process you might apply to your decision to quit smoking cigarettes as a new social worker.

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: Tobacco use was common in my family, and it was no surprise to my family when I started smoking cigarettes in high school. By the time I was in college, I knew I had to quit! My clothes reeked of tobacco, my fingernails and teeth were stained, and I began to notice that local policies now prohibited smoking in offices and buildings. When I did step onto the street corner to smoke, I felt publicly ashamed of this vice. I had been in a pre-contemplative stage of change for three months on this new job site working with adolescents. I wanted to be a good role model and knew I had to change my own behavior—to “walk the talk” about health. My contemplation stage assumed strength as I prepared to change my lifestyle. The action taken included visiting a medical doctor for a Chantix prescription; speaking with a pharmacist about possible side effects; beginning active membership in a Stop Smoking support group; and changing my diet and increasing my exercise schedule. This maintenance program lasted for six months without a relapse (thank goodness). I have been tobacco-free for two years.
