Answer: Nixon announced the Nixon Doctrine to try to deal with events in Vietnam. The United States would continue to support the war financially but would withdraw its troops. Henry Kissinger negotiated a ceasefire with North Vietnam but eventually the communists took over the South. Nixon was more successful in dealing with other communist countries, which he no longer viewed as monolithic. He established formal diplomatic relations with communist China and pursued a policy of détente with the Soviet Union to try to reduce world tensions.
