If a woman is diagnosed as having a heart murmur, what anatomical condition does she have, and how does it affect the heart function?
What will be an ideal response?
Anatomically, a heart murmur occurs when the leaves of the mitral (= bicuspid) valve do not meet and there is
some regurgitation of blood from the left ventricle back into the left atrium at the start of ventricular contraction.
The problem may be caused by abnormally short valve leaves, defective papillary muscles, or short chordae
tendineae. As the blood flow through this region becomes turbulent, a rushing or gurgling sound is heard, and this
is the heart murmur. In most cases, it does not impair heart function significantly.
