Answer the multiple-choice question about main idea based on the content of the paragraph below.

When they first met in 1931, Mrs. Wallis Simpson was merely one of a group of friends— fashionable, fast, and witty. She had been twice married; however, Prince Edward found her entertaining and undemanding. She appealed to his affection for things American, and it seems that her refusal to compromise and her treatment of the Prince in a manner unthinkable in an Englishwoman were additional attractions. By 1934 he had determined to marry her. It required of the Prince no effort of imagination to gauge the likely response of his family to the news; he wished to tell the King, but the opportunity never came, and in the new year the King was dead. In his first months as King, Edward grew moody, badtempered, and disinclined to keep appointments. In the summer of 1936 foreign papers splashed romantic photographs across their front pages. On one occasion a photograph was published which showed King Edward meeting Mrs. Simpson at a train station; it was unfortunate that on the same day he had sent his brother to perform a public duty rather than go himself, the official reason, also published, being that he was still in mourning. The British public was unwilling to accept a woman like Wallis Simpson as wife to their sovereign. For King Edward the agony was prolonged, the more so as Mrs. Simpson, seeing what she had brought about, stated her willingness to leave him. King Edward had bound himself by his word to marriage to Wallis Simpson and that meant giving up the throne. On December 10, 1936, he put his signature to the document of abdication, left for France, and married Mrs. Simpson. The main idea of the passage is that a. Prince Edward gave up his throne for the love of a woman. b. the whole of England thought Prince Edward a fool for giving up his throne. c. King Edward was forced off the throne of England because of his relationship with an American woman.
