Why is it important for sewage treatment plants to remove nitrates and phosphates from sewage before discharging it into a river? Explain.

What will be an ideal response?

Nitrates and phosphates are plant nutrients that can cause algae blooms and overgrowth of other aquatic plants in the water. As the algae and other plants die, dissolved oxygen is depleted and aquatic organisms may die.
